Welcome Dr. Valerie Littles-Butler

Dear Southwest High School Community,

I am pleased to announce Dr. Valerie Littles-Butler as the new principal of Southwest High School, effective July 1.

Dr. Littles-Butler was most recently an administrator at Central High School in Saint Paul. She is deeply rooted in the Twin Cities and has more than 30 years of educational experience, including in Minneapolis Public Schools. Dr. Littles-Butler has served as a principal and assistant principal in Saint Paul, an adjunct professor at Concordia University, a classroom teacher, and basketball coach. Her commitment to providing a quality education for all students stands out in the work she’s accomplished.

Dr. Littles-Butler holds a doctorate degree in educational leadership from St. Mary’s University, and completed her principal licensure and master’s degree there as well. She earned her superintendent licensure from Minnesota State University and bachelor’s degree from Florida A & M University.

In talking about her new role, Dr. Littles-Butler praised the culture of achievement at Southwest while acknowledging the leadership transitions of the last few years. “Southwest is one of the best schools in Minnesota and carries a proud tradition of seeking academic rigor and opportunity for all students,” she said. “While the last few years have presented challenges for our students, staff, and school community, I am certain we can continue to do great things as a community. I look forward to meeting all of you and working together to provide each of our students with the education they deserve.”

Please join me in welcoming Principal Valerie Littles-Butler to the Southwest community. We will send more information about a formal opportunity to meet her later this summer. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Carla Steinbach
Associate Superintendent
