OFFICIAL ACADEMIC NOTICE TO ALL SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS:

In order to graduate, Seniors must pass all required courses.  If students fail one or more courses, they will need to make up the required courses prior to receiving their diploma.  Credit recovery will be offered during summer school.

If Seniors receive a mid-term Quarter 4 progress report indicating that they are currently receiving a “D” or “F” in any class, there is still time to pass the class. Seniors are strongly encouraged to work with their teachers to successfully complete their courses. Seniors not receiving Quarter 4 mid-term progress reports should continue to work to ensure the successful completion of their courses.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to utilize Parent Portal to monitor their students’ progress.

In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, students must be within .75 credits of the total credits needed to graduate. Seniors who are required to complete required credits, in summer school, must sign a form indicating they will attend. Counselors run credit checks after Quarter 3 grades are finalized and will contact families of seniors in jeopardy of not graduating.

After quarter 4 grades are finalized, final transcripts are submitted to the college/university/technical school the senior will attend. Offers of admission are conditional based on maintaining previous academic level. Students failing to maintain their established academic level may find their offers of admission rescinded or may be placed on academic probation upon entering the post-graduate institution.

Students enrolled in ALC credit recovery must finish all assigned work by Friday, May 24th. Students enrolled in MPS Online Learning must finish all assigned work by Tuesday, May 14th. In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, and receive a diploma, students must have MPS Online Learning credits and/or ALC completed and verified by their Counselor.

SENIORS NEED TO CLEAR OBLIGATIONS

Outstanding obligations from previous years are carried over year-to-year. Seniors should start checking the following areas in early May to see if they have any outstanding items:  Leif Kurth - Counseling Office, for transcript fees owed; Kim Royston - Athletic office (Rm. 113), for athletic equip/fees; Lisa Ledman for outstanding IB and AP test fees, in Rm. W107C; Media Center - for any outstanding books/calculators etc.; Phy. Ed. Teachers - for use of locks; & Mike Burley – Lunchroom, for outstanding accounts. If items cannot be found and returned, a payment by check is accepted through May 19th. After May 19th, cash only. Checks can be made payable to Southwest High School.

EVERY SENIOR WILL GO THROUGH A YEAR END CHECKOUT PROCESS

The week prior to Senior Finals Week, all seniors will meet in the College & Career Center to finish up their My Life Plan, in Naviance, and verify where their final transcript should be sent. Next, they take their checkout cards around to seek out the signatures they need in order  to be cleared.

IS THERE STILL TIME TO  ORDER ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OTHER ITEMS FOR MY GRADUATE?

Yes. Go to www.jostens.com  to find official Southwest items online. Once on the home page, enter “Southwest High School.” They have a wide variety of items you may order and pay for online. Remember, you do not order the cap/gown, tassel or diploma because that has already been done for you. It is not mandatory that you order anything.

WHAT TIME DO THE SENIORS NEED TO BE AT MARIUCCI ARENA?

Check in will begin at 3:30 p.m.  All seniors need to be checked in and ready to line up no later than 4:00 p.m. Students meet backstage.  No families or friends are allowed back stage. Remind your graduate that they may not carry any purse, back pack, or any additional items back stage. Family/friends should hold onto these items. They may carry their cell phones on the arena floor; however, PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING THE CEREMONY.

WHAT WILL SEATING BE LIKE FOR FAMILIES/FRIENDS?

Seating is general admission; seats cannot be reserved. Accessible seating for individuals with mobility disabilities is available on the top row, near the single railings. We strongly encourage all families and friends to be in their seats no later than 4:15 p.m. for announcements; the Grand March starts promptly at 4:30. Once the Grand March starts, seating will be allowed only at select times during the ceremony. The reserved area on the arena floor is for graduates, orchestra, choir, and security, only.  NO ONE FROM THE AUDIENCE IS ALLOWED ON THE ARENA FLOOR BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER THE CEREMONY. WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE DURING THE CEREMONY.

WILL THERE BE A PRAYER ROOM AVAILABLE?

Yes, a room is available and designated for prayer.  Signs will be posted inside the front doors or you may ask an usher.

DIRECTIONS TO MARIUCCI & AVAILABLE PARKING OPTIONS

Enclosed you will find a map with directions and options for parking. Parking prices vary depending on location. Surface lots (Maroon, Victory, & 37) range from $5-$8 and parking garages (University Ave. & 4th Street ramps) charge an hourly rate that maxes out at $12.

CAN WE BRING BALLOON BOUQUETS INTO THE ARENA?

No balloons are allowed inside the arena. Unfortunately, balloons can get loose and end up in the ceiling and ductwork of the facility.  Mariucci Arena employees will strictly enforce this policy.

WHAT ARE THE RULES ON PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOTAPING?

Individuals taking pictures or videotaping must remain in their seats during the ceremony. Grad Images (www.gradimages.com) will have professional photographers taking still photos of all seniors accepting their diplomas and exiting the stage.  Each senior will receive a coupon for a free 5 x 7 photo.  Each graduate photographed will receive (through mail/email) a passport-sized photo proof following graduation, along with the opportunity to select from a variety of photo packages, with no obligation to purchase.  Grad Images will fulfill the orders within 7 days of receiving your order.  We’ve been very pleased throughout the years with the work done by Grad Images.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE CEREMONY?

We ask all family and friends to please remain in their seats and wait for the class to exit. The Class of 2019 will proceed backstage to pick up their paper diploma and then exit at the rear of the arena. They will walk to the front of the arena, outside, where they can meet their family and friends.
