United States History Class
Course Description/Purpose This course is designed to present the district US History curriculum at a pace for students with IEPs. It utilizes regular ed. (mainstream) resources as well as individualized materials and methods to teach the skills and knowledge required in the Minnesota State Standards. Semester one will focus on the development of the United States as a nation from the pre-Columbian period through the Civil war era. Semester two will focus on industrialization of the late 19th century through to contemporary America. Students will use primary and secondary source documents and materials to form an understanding of the past.

Students will learn the skills of an historian, by doing so meet the following learning objectives: § Become proficient at historical inquiry § Develop critical thinking skills § Articulate ideas, concepts and content both verbally and orally. __________________________________________________________________________________ Units of Study Indigenous People of North America; Colonial Development; American Revolution; Foundations of the American Government and Nation; Westward Expansion; Innovations and Inventions; Early Reform Movements; Causes of the Civil War; Civil War and Reconstruction; Industrialization and Immigration; Imperialism and World War I The Twenties and Thirties; World War II; The Cold War Era; The Rights Revolution; Vietnam and its Aftermath; Contemporary America. Textbooks/Equipment Textbooks used are AGS US History and The Americans. A copy is provided for class, if more time is needed with the text, students may check one out at the media center. Separate folders to hold reading handouts and notebook for notes and class work is required, do not combine with other subjects! Use of internet and computer processing, ie: google docs, will also be required.
