SWHS Hockey
Southwest HOCKEY!
There may be no subject that sparks more emotions and discussion than the history, current situation and future of Southwest hockey. I would far prefer to discuss the change for the Indians to the Lakers than to get cornered by alumni who wants to talk about hockey. Even worse if their hockey jacket still fits; that crazy puck stitched to their chest and staring right through me.
A $20,000 Education
A $20,000 education
At the highest level – total budget divided by total students, the cost of an education in the Minneapolis public schools is $20,464 annually per kid. No wonder I am finding it so hard to fundraise for a city school - all the kids are being funded at the private school level (for another $1000 per kid we could send them all to Blake!)
The Story of the Minneapolis Novas
The Story of the Minneapolis Novas
At first glance, the story of the Minneapolis Novas has the makings of a movie script: a once thriving hockey area is down to one team, losing players to the “rich” private schools. Rivals from a year ago are forced to come together as one team. And a young coach comes home to Minnesota from the East Coast to lead them, not fully aware of what he’s getting himself into.
There are just two problems that would get the script tossed out: things have gone way too smoothly for the team, and the dramatic turning point came way too early in the season.
Still, it’s a story worth telling, because this is the State of Hockey. The game doesn’t just belong to the big suburbs and the little hockey towns in the outstate areas.
