COURSE DESCRIPTION

Fusion Reading 2 is a continuation of Fusion 1.  We will continue to reinforce the variety of strategies that were taught last year and learn new strategies.  These strategies will enable you to become both a proficient reader and a proficient test taker.  Along the way, you will read highly engaging novels that YOU select and apply the newly learned reading strategies to these novels. 

 TOPICS COVERED

  • The Vocabulary Process:   A way to figure out the meaning of unknown vocabulary words.
  • Book Study:  An opportunity to select and read books of your choice.
  • Thinking Reading:   An opportunity to read and think about literature as a class.
  • The Prediction Strategy:  How to make predictions before and while you read.
  • The Bridging Strategy:  A way to figure out how to pronounce unknown vocabulary words.
  • The Summarization Strategy:  Instruction in how to summarize what you read.
  • PASS the Test:   How to do well on state assessments
  • Integration:  How to use all reading strategies together.

EXPECTATIONS

We established classroom expectations together.  They are as follows:

  • No side conversations:  only one person talk and everyone else listen
  • Respect others:  No hitting- no name calling
  • Don’t talk back to teacher
  • Disagree with respect.  For example, “ I respectfully disagree. . . “
  • May listen to music during work time with permission.  Keep sound low.  
  • Phones away when directed.
  • Be on time for class.

MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT

  • 3 ring binder
  • Journal
  • Novels

MATERIALS YOU NEED TO BRING

  • Pens /pencils
  • Novel (if you don’t want to read what is provided—you may get at school library or neighborhood library)
