I.B. Film Standard Level

In I.B. Film we'll study classic film theories and movements as well as practice our own production technique. The course requires a high degree of commitment to the art form and a desire to engage in discussion and an exchange of ideas about the art of film making not only from a historical and cultural point of view but also from the point of view of a producing artist. You will critique the work of your class mates as well as subject your own work to critical review.

Filmmakers are evaluated ultimately in one of five areas:

  1. Scriptwriting
  2. Cinematography
  3. Editing
  4. Sound Design
  5. Directing

That said however, students get ample opportunity to practice skills in all five areas throughout this year long course.

Film theory involves study into auteur theory, formalism, realism, gender and Marxist theory. Historical movements include the Silent Era, German Expressionism, Film Noir, The French New Wave and Hollywood's Big Three (Spielberg, Lucas and Coppola) as well as others.

Final products to be evaluated include a 8-10 page documentary script, a 10 minute oral analysis of a film clip and a five minute film with 1200 word written commentary.
