I love teaching at Southwest.

I have a B.A. in English and education with a minor in philosophy. I studied feminist studies at the University of York in England, and I received my MFA in creative writing from the Naropa Institute in Boulder, where I learned under the tutelage of Allen Ginsberg. You should probably buy my novel, Under Ground, at startribune.com/underground, so I can become rich and buy a catarmaran. I have been teaching since 1992. I incorporate history and philosophy into my teaching on a regular basis. Even though my curriculum includes an inordinate amount of dead white men, I never "forget the ladies".

My curriculum is intense. My expectations are high. In creative writing, students will study poetry, short stories, novels, non-fiction, and creative non-fiction as a means to inspire our own creative writing.  Students will learn a little Greek. A little Latin. In Theory of Knowledge, students will explore the question: How do we know what we know? We will study ways of knowing as they relate to mathematics, the arts, human sciences, natural sciences, indigenous knowledge systems, religious knowledge systems, history and ethics. The objective of Theory of Knowledge is to change the world.

In my spare time, I like long walks on the beach and I'm looking for someone who wears camo and enjoys holding dead fish.  Just Kidding. I took that from another teacher's online dating profile. I wanted to see if you were still reading. I actually spend my free time writing and rowing. And I'm a binge reader. It is not uncommon for me to read a novel in one sitting. It makes me pretty unpopular with my friends and famiy, but I cannot curb my obcession with books. Can you relate?

I'm excited to get to know you as the year progresses. I have posted links to the syllabus for each class I teach. Students will recieve a list of books during the first week of school. You don't have to buy any of them.

PDF Root, Prefix, and Suffix list   --  Excellent ACT and SAT review. Necessary for AP students, suggested for IB students.
