Coaching Staff Short Biographies

(In the process of being updated for the 2014-2015 Season)

Head Coach Drew Holbrook has 30 years of endurance training, racing and coaching including Nordic skiing, cycling, triathlon and running. He is a USSA Certified Level 100 Nordic Coach as well as an A.C.E. Certified Personal Trainer.

Coach James Dundon was the head coach of SW Nordic from 2002 - 2013.  Before that he worked as an assistant Nordic coach for Burnsville High School. He also coached the St. Thomas Crew Team from 1999 - 2003.  As an athlete, Coach Dundon has been a member of the US National Rowing Team.  He has won numerous national championships, and he still actively competes in master level races.  Additionally, he simply loves everything about skiing and racing.

Coach Bill Kerker is the Co-Director of Player Development for Minneapolis Lacrosse and former youth hockey player/coach and bandy player. He enjoys working outdoors with landscape/garden business and really likes the winter conditions and physical demands of Nordic. He'll be participating in the LNR marathon program in West Yellowstone this fall and skiing the Kortelopet this winter.

Coach Martin Richmond first skied (classic) just after graduating from St. Olaf in 1976, but not seriously until after medical residency in 1985. He skied 3 years in Birke elite wave in his 40's (skate) and now after 26 Birkies skis classic wave one. Coach Richmond has coached MYSL at all levels. He also has extensive technique training with LNR in the past 4 years.

This is Coach Chris Johnson’s third year coaching the SWHS Nordic ski team. His primary responsibilities include the marathon program, JV and first time skiers.  Coach Johnson is a Southwest Alum, graduating in 1984 where he was a three sport athlete in Football (team Captain), Hockey and Track.  In college, he moved on to rowing and was a member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison crew team for four years, winning a national championship.  He has run 4 marathons and skied 6 Birkebiners.  He has worked in sales for 21 years and is currently employed by National Gypsum Co.

Coach Michael Gotzsche has helped coach the SWHS Nordic ski team for 7 seasons now, having two kids go through the program since they were eighth graders. He participates in many sports, but mostly to get ready for the ski racing season.  Coach Gotzsche enjoys passing along this passion to kids be it teaching them how to put on their skis or helping them peak for state.

Coach Corey Brinkema has ski raced since age 8 and hopes to continue well past 80. He raced at Dartmouth College, was a 2x National Masters Champion in 2005 and has 18 Birkie’s behind him. He loves seeing his kids enjoy skiing even more than he did at that age, and is thrilled to impact a little skiing wisdom to the Southwest Nordic Ski Team. Count on him for classic and skate technique guidance, racing tactics, waxing, and passion for this amazing sport.
