Expectations of all NHS members:

Being selected to this nationally recognized organization remains one of the highest honors bestowed on a high school student.  Membership acceptance is based upon a student's outstanding commitment as demonstrated in the following areas: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

A student is never inducted simply because of high academic grade average. The National Honor Society strives to recognize the whole student. Moreover, the SW Honor Society Chapter enforces selection rules as established by the national organization.

NHS membership should be considered more than honorable recognition.  NHS members are expected to maintain the same commitment to city, school or neighborhood which led to their selection.  The Southwest NHS chapter is, first and foremost, a service organization.  Newly inducted members are expected to attend monthly meetings and to participate in some of the various service projects undertaken during the school year.

The NHS Southwest Chapter has worked hard to bring the accomplishmentsof outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and community. To become an NHS member, a Southwest student must take the pledge of membership and sign the membership section of the NHS Constitution.

Though it is uncommon, board members do have the right to recommend that a student be removed from the organization if s/he does not meet expectations for participation in the chapter.   The chapter advisors will then consider the recommendation before making a decision.

Selection Process:

To be eligible to apply to join NHS, candidates must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA.   Your application must be completed in full in order for your application to be considered

A Southwest faculty committee meets to assess the various candidates.  This committee closely consider the applicant's demonstrated commitment to school and community, and the quality of the applicant's short essay.  The faculty committee makes a final decision.  There is no process for appeal.
