Hi Southwest Students:  It's Mr. Whitehead here and welcome to my webpage.  It's a work in progress but I promise to add to it regularly to keep you informed of what is going on in PE. This is my 23rd year at Southwest High School ( I started in 1992) and I am very proud to work at the best high school in Minneapolis! I graduated from St. Luke's College of Physical Education (Exeter, England) in 1979 and my first teaching assignment was way back in 1980 at a school called the Henry Beaufort School in Winchester, England.  I also taught at South Park High School in Lincoln, England.  Whilst completing my Masters Degree in Sports Science at Iowa State University in Ames, IA I taught P.E. as a graduate assistant for 2 years.
I will be teaching Fitness for Life 1, Fitness for Life 2, and the FFL alternating day class with Freshman Choir.  I am also very excited to be teaching the new IB course, Sports, Exercise and Health Science.  This is a one year IB Standard Level course (students can take IB exam or do class for regular Credit) that explores the science that surrounds the sports and exercise that are so popular in our lives today.
I have 12 grade twins (one boy, one girl) and I enjoy soccer, rugby, and fishing. I have coached high school soccer at Minneapolis South (boys), Minneapolis Southwest (girls) and Edina Girls.  Outside of school I run a soccer training company called Coerver Coaching Minnesota.  Being a PE teacher, it helps that I am crazy about all kinds of sports and I hope to pass on some of this passion for Fitness and Sports to you in my classes.  The world is changing fast with technology at our finger tips, but we must never lose sight of the fact that our bodies need exercise.  Fitness can be fun and we'll be learning many ways in which you can stay active and feel good about working out.  I look forward to meeting you in the West Gym for FFL and in Room 07 for Sports Science.
