News from the Volunteer Center

It’s hard to believe that the school year is almost over, and summer is upon us.  This was my first year as Volunteer Coordinator for Southwest High School, and unfortunately, it will be my last.  I’ve loved working here and meeting so many great teachers and parents.  The generosity of so many people will never cease to amaze me.  Even though I am leaving, the position will continue; the Volunteer Center is needed as a source of help for teachers, and as a way for parents to connect with their school.

Here are just a few things that have been accomplished in the past year:

  • Hundreds of dollars in supplies were donated to teachers.
  • Tutors were found for students
  • The College and Career Center was staffed
  • Open houses, dances, staff appreciation events were all coordinated and staffed
  • Tests were proctored
  • Individuals became regular assistants to specific teachers
  • Thousands of envelopes were stuffed

There will be a Thank You Open House on Wednesday, May 31st from 8-10AM at Pearson’s Restaurant for anyone who has volunteered in any capacity over the last year.  Enjoy coffee and muffins, and meet other parents who have shared their time with us.  If you don’t get an invitation in the mail and you have volunteered at Southwest, forgive me, but please come anyway!  Please RSVP by calling the Volunteer Center at 612-668-3049, or emailing me at Michele.jansen@mpls.k12.mn.us.  I hope to see you there!
