Course Description
This course lays the foundation the continuing development of language skills and culture. You will begin this class listening and responding. As you increase understanding, you will begin reading and writing. During this basic course you will listen much of the time as you begin to process Spanish. At the end of Spanish I, you will be able to understand and express yourself at a basic level. The text book is Realidades published by Pearson/Prentice Hall. This will be used along with TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Stories)
Materials
You will need a notebook, a pocket folder, paper, pencils, pens with blue or black ink and a Spanish/English dictionary.
Expectations
It is expected that students will speak Spanish during class. Daily attendance is necessary for success. Attendance, homework, assessments and participation will be important in the student's grade. Students are expected to bring the necessary materials daily. Homework and projects are due at the assigned time. Late work will earn a maximum grade of C. Students who are not able to behave appropriately will receive a warning. If the behavior continues, a call home will be made and placement assessed. Students are also expected to demonstrate academic integrity at all times. Cheatiing includes, but is not limited to, copying another student's work, using outside resources during a test or using an electronic translator on assignments.
Grades
The grading system for Spanish I is based on two categories. The categories are daily work/assignments (40%) and tests/quizzes/projects (60%) There is no extra credit. You are responsible for making up you work when you are absent. For each day of an excused absence you will have one day to make up the assignment. If the make-up requires me to be there, I will be available by arrangement.

Guidelines
Classroom guidelines are few yet useful in creating a positive and productive learning environment for all:
1. Speak Spanish
2. Be on time
3. Arrive prepared with all materials
4. No side taking, use of electronics or doing work from other classes
5. No gum allowed.
