Language acquisition is a developmental process.  Some topics may be covered in more than one course, but the depth of study and the expectations are different at each level. 

 

Spanish I                

Grades:    9-12

Course Objectives:

Students will be able to do the following:

·         Follow classroom directions

·         Describe themselves, their friends and their family members

·         Express likes, dislikes, and preferences

·         Express agreement or disagreement

·         Talk about when and where they engage in pastimes

·         Give informal commands

·         Describe their homes and household routines

·         Make simple comparisons

·         Extend and accept simple invitations

·         Express a basic understanding of the geography of the Spanish-speaking world

Course Description:

In this course, students will learn the basic vocabulary and structures they will need to communicate in Spanish.  Throughout the year, they will improve their comprehension of spoken and written Spanish and begin oral and written expression in the language.  In addition to expanding their communication skills, students will begin to explore the cultures of Latin America and Spain through thematic study.

 

 

Spanish II     

Grades:     9-12

Prerequisite:  Spanish I or equivalent (i.e., a minimum of two years of middle school Spanish)

Prerequisite:   Spanish II or equivalent (i.e., three years of strong performance in a middle school class with teacher recommendation)

Course Objectives:

Students will be able to do the following:

·         Express opinions using the subjunctive mood

·         Demonstrate knowledge of artistic movements in Spain and Latin America

·         Describe physical symptoms and emotions

·         Give advice using formal and informal commands

·         Discuss relationships with family and friends

·         Talk about future plans using the future tense

·         Understand cultural perspectives on the topics studied

·         Discuss the contributions of indigenous cultures of Mexico

·         Continue to use materials in English and Spanish to learn more about Spanish- speaking cultures

 

Course Description:

In this course, students will build on the foundation they have acquired in Spanish II.  Students will improve their comprehension of spoken and written Spanish and improve their oral and written expression in the language, with a focus on preparing students for the IB Diploma Programme.  In addition to expanding their communication skills, students will begin using the Spanish language to explore other disciplines, and deepen their understanding of the cultures of Latin America and Spain through thematic study. 


SPANISH IV  
Grades - 10,11,12
Credits - 3 per year (0.75 per quarter)
Prerequisite - Spanish Level III
Graduation requirements - Elective.  2-4 years of a single world language is recommended for college entrance.
 
Students continue to develop proficiency in Spanish language and deepen their understanding of Spanish -speaking cultures as they:
     - advance listening and speaking skills through increasingly complex conversations on everyday real-world topics;
     - read texts written for native speakers with guidance (stories, short novels, plays, current events, poetry, letters);
     - write with guidance in Spanish (messages, letters, or compositions)
     - use knowledge of the language to make connections with other subjects (geography/politics, fine arts, and math/science);
     - identify and interpret social practices within Spanish-speaking cultures;
     - analyze and discuss the unique and interesting persepctives, practices, and products of the culture and develop awareness of different worldviews;
     - establish connections with Spanish-speaking cultures through the use of  technology, media, and native-language sources;
     - refine language learning strategies to maintain a lifelong interest in world languages and multiple cultures at home and around the world.
 

SPANISH V - IB/SL    
Grades - 11, 12
Credits - 1 Credit per year (0.75 credits per quarter); College credits determined by the particular postsecondary institution
Prerequisite - Spanish Level IV
Graduation requirements - Elective.
 
Students improve and refine proficiency in Spanish language to deepen their
understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures are they:
 
     - refine listening and speaking skills though increasingly complex conversations on everyday real-world topics;
     - read extensively using native-language materials that reflect Spanish-speaking cultures;
     - write advanced level compositions and stories;
     - use appropriate language and register to communicate;
     - use knowledge of the language to make connections with other subjects (geography/politics, fine arts, math/science);
     - identify and interpret social practices within Spansih-speaking cultures;
     - discuess, analyze, and evaluate the unique and interesting perspectives, practices, and products of the culture, and develop awareness of different worledviews;
     - establish connections with Spansih-speaking cultures through the use of technology, media, and authentic resources;
     - refine language learning strategies to maintain a lifelong interest in world languages and multiple cultures at home and around the world.


SPANISH Level VI - IB/HL     

Grade - 12

Credits - 3 per year (0.75 per quarter)
Prerequisite - Spanish Five IB/SL
Graduation requirements - Elective.
 
Students improve and refine proficiency in Spanish language to deepen their undersanding of Spanish-speaking cultures as they:
     - refine listening and speaking skills through increasingly complex and presentations on everyday authentic topics;
     - read extensively using authentic materials that reflect Spanish-speaking cultures, with an emphasis on literature and poetry;
     - write advanced level compositions and stories;
     - use appropriate language and register to communicate;
     - use knowledge of the language to make connections with other (geography/politics, fine arts, math/science);
     - identify and interpret social practices within Spanish-speaking cultures;
     - discuss, analyze, and evalutate the unique and interesting perspectives, practices, and products of the culture, and develop awareness of different worldviews;
     - establish connections with Spanish -speaking cultures through the use of technology, media, and authentic sources;
     - refine language learning strategies to maintain a lifelong interest in world languages and multiples cultures at home and around the world.
