English as a Second Language (ESL)
High school students attend ESL classes as part of their daily schedule. The ESL class has a curriculum aligned with state English Language Proficiency standards and is designed to increase students’ social and academic English skills to increase success in content classes.
ELLs receive academic instruction in simplified English in specially adapted classes in which learning is scaffolded to bring ELLs to high standards in content areas. The teacher holds a regular elementary or secondary content license plus an ESL license or significant training in sheltered instruction techniques.
