Class of 2017 - Graduation will be Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 4:30 p.m.   At Marucci Arena on the campus of the Univesity of Minnesota.

Academic, Year End Schedule and Graduation Information

We hope that your experience at Southwest High School has been positive and rewarding! Please read carefully the important dates and other information for seniors and parents. ACADEMIC OFFICIAL NOTICE TO ALL SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS:                                         

Seniors must pass all required courses in order to meet graduation requirements.  Should they fail one or more courses, they will need to make up the required courses in order to receive their diploma.  Credit recovery will be offered during summer school. 

If your child receives a mid-term Quarter 4 progress report indicating that he/she is currently receiving a “D” or “F” in any class, there is still time to pass the class. Seniors are strongly encouraged to work with their teachers to successfully complete their courses.  Seniors not receiving Quarter 4 mid-term progress reports should continue to work to ensure their successful completion of their courses.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to utilize parent portal to monitor students’ progress.

In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, the student must be within .75 credits of the total credits needed to graduate.  The student must sign a form indicating that he or she will attend summer school to gain the needed credits. The counselors will complete another credit check on all seniors once 3rd quarter grades are final. The counselor will then contact families who have a student in jeopardy of not graduating.

Colleges will also receive and review second semester gradesOffers of admission are conditional based on maintaining previous academic level.  Students failing to maintain their established academic level may find their offers of admission rescinded or may be placed on academic probation to start their college education.

 

Seniors are strongly encouraged to start clearing obligations.  Outstanding obligations from previous years are carried over into their senior year. All have to be cleared prior to cap/gown day. Seniors should check the following areas to see if they have any outstanding items.  Barb  Mahal – Counseling Office for transcript fees owed; Ryan Lamberty in the Athletic office (Rm. #N134) for athletic equip/fees; Lisa Ledman for outstanding IB and AP test fees in Rm. #W229B; Media Center for outstanding books/calculators etc. from previous years; gym teachers for usage of locks and lunchroom for any outstanding accounts. If items cannot be found and returned a payment by check is accepted through May 19th. After May 19th, cash only. Checks can be made payable to Southwest High School. No student will receive their cap/gown if they have outstanding obligations.

 

One last item - Seniors will meet with counselors in May to request final transcripts and to complete their My Life Plan graduation requirements.  All final transcripts to colleges will be sent out no later than June 20th. 

WHAT IS THE TIME AND LOCATION OF GRADUATION?

Graduation will be held at Mariucci Arena – on the campus of the University of Minnesota.  The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m.  Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

 

IS THERE GRADUATION REHEARSAL AND A COST FOR GRADUATION?

Yes, there will be a mandatory rehearsal on Thursday, June 1st in the Southwest High School auditorium. Promptly, starting at 9:30 a.m. Every graduating senior in Minneapolis is required to pay a $35 fee.  CASH ONLYNO CHECKS ACCEPTED.  After rehearsal cap/gowns will be issued to every student. The district covers the cost of cap/gowns and the rental of facilities. The $35 fee helps schools cover all additional costs associated with graduation (such as programs, diplomas, diploma jackets, extra security, etc.).   Unfortunately, we DO NOT have any extra money to waive this fee for any student. We want all families to plan ahead for this. If anyone is interested in making a donation to help other students please contact Barb Mahal in the Counseling Office at 612-668-3050.

 

IS THERE STILL TIME TO  ORDER ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OTHER ITEMS FOR MY GRADUATE?

Yes. Go to www.jostens.com  to find official Southwest items on line. Once, on the home page enter Southwest High School.  Then click on shop the collection. They have a wide variety of items you may order and pay for on line.  Remember, you don’t have to order cap/gown, tassel or diploma because that is already been ordered. This is not mandatory you order anything. This is for some who like the additional offerings.

 

WHAT TIME DO THE SENIOR’S NEED TO BE AT MARIUCCI ARENA?

Check in will begin at 3:30 p.m.  All seniors need to be checked in and ready to line up no later than 4:00 p.m. Students will meet back behind the stage.  No families or friends are allowed back stage.  Southwest staff will go over last minute instructions with the class. Please remind your graduate that they may not carry any purse, back pack, or any additional items back stage. Family/friends should hold onto these items.  If the graduates or you keep a cell phone remember,   ALL CELL PHONES ARE TO BE TURNED OFF DURING THE CEREMONY.

 

WILL YOU NEED TICKETS OR ARE YOU LIMITED TO THE NUMBER OF GUESTS?

No tickets are required for admittance.   No limit on number of guests. All family and friends are welcomed to attend.

 

WHAT WILL SEATING BE LIKE?

Seating will be first come, first served.  We suggest you sit anywhere down the sides of the arena first.  Handicap seating is anywhere around the top of the arena where there are single railings.  We strongly encourage all families and friends to be in their seats no later than 4:15 p.m. for announcements and the Grand March of the Class of 2017. Once, the grand march starts seating will be allowed only at select times during the ceremony. There will be a reserved area for graduates on the floor of the arena. Family/friends ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE ARENA FLOOR BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER CEREMONY.

 

WILL THERE BE A PRAYER ROOM AVAILABE?

Yes. Special arrangements have been made for a designated room.  Signs will be posted inside the front doors or ask an usher.   

 

CAN WE GET DIRECTIONS TO MARIUCCI AND AVAILABE PARKING OPTIONS?

Enclosed you will find a map with directions and options for parking. Average parking price at the lots and ramps are $5-$8.  

 

CAN WE BRING BALLOON BOUQUETS INTO THE CONVENTION CENTER

No balloons are allowed inside the arena. Unfortunately, balloons can get loose and end up in the ceiling and ductwork of the facility.  Mariucci Arena employees will strictly enforce this policy. They will stop you inside the front door and store them in a storage room until after graduation if you do bring them in.

 

WHAT ARE THE RULES ON PICTURE/VIDEOTAPING?

You must remain in your seats during the entire ceremony when taking pictures or videotapingNo one but the grads, orchestra and the choir are allowed on the arena floor. We have Grad Images www.gradimages.com once again who have professional photographers taking still photos of all seniors accepting their diplomas and exiting the stage.  Each senior will receive a coupon for a free 5 x 7 photo.  Each graduate photographed will receive (through mail/email) a passport-sized photo proof following graduation, along with the opportunity to select from a variety of photo packages, with no obligation to purchase.  Grad images will fulfill the orders with 7 days of receiving your order.  Video- taping of the ceremony has also been arranged by the district.  More information on that part will be forthcoming. We’ve been very pleased and confident throughout the years with Grad Images.

 

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE CEREMONY?

We ask all family and friends to please remain in their seats for the class to exit the arena floor first.  The class will proceed back stage to pick up their actual paper diploma.  After picking up their diplomas graduates will greet their families up on top of the arena or outside for additional celebration and personal picture taking.
