Welcome to Yumi Izumisawa!

Our new Japanese assistant teacher, Yumi Izumisawa started working atSouthwest on April 24th.  She is from Sapporo, Japan.  She is very excited to be at Southwest.  Please welcome her!  She will be with us until next April and help individual students improve their conversation skills in Japanese.   Our Japanese program benefits greatly from the additional native speaker every day in class, and the alternative perspectives offered.  Mrs. French comes from Shimane in the south, whereas Ms. Izumisawa comes from the island of Hokkaido in the north, with a climate much similar to that of Minnesota.

SW Student to Visit Japan!

Noah Madoff, who is a sophomore this year, received the opportunity
to go to Japan this summer for two months through a program called
American Field Service (AFS).  He will be in Nagoya from the end of
June.  Noah will have an chance to attend a high school and enjoy some
sight seeing while studying Japanese language and culture first hand.

Japanese Visitors to Minneapolis

Ten people from Hirata, Japan are visiting Minneapolis between August
4th and 11th.  Those people hosted students from Southwest last summer
when 12 students were in Shimane Prefecture.  Students who participated
in the last trip to Japan will have a chance for a reunion with their
former hosts.  Those interested in hosting Japanese visitors,
participating in the annual SW trips to Japan, or other exchange
opportunities should contact Mrs. French in room 219 or email her at

(kyoko.french@mpls.k12.mn.us).
