Disbelief

The truth is doubted even
As they’re marching in the street
It began with curfews and restrictions
On where you can and cannot be

Out in the open, exposed and yet
Still they did not believe
Because they did not wish to
See the signals of deceit

They told themselves “all will
Be okay for soon they will be gone”
Because it gave them comfort even
When they knew that they were wrong

Most people knew but no one said
That these were all false hopes
Because they knew for many
It was the only way to cope

Now they wish that they took
Heed to what an old man said
When he told his tale of Germans
And all the Jewish dead

None believed of what he spoke
When he warned this day would come
None believed, and now?
Too late . . . for something to be done
