Cross Country Running: Boys and Girls

Southwest Sends Four Runners to State Cross Country Meet

At a rainy, wet region race in Mound, Wednesday afternoon, our Minneapolis Southwest Boys and Girls cross country teams did really well.

In the boys race, five of the top six ranked teams in the state are in our Region, and only the top two teams advance to the state meet. Our boys placed 4th, (out of 13 teams), so they did not qualify for state as a team, but that finish should move them up to the #5 ranking in the next state polls. Three of our boys qualified for the State Meet at St Olaf next Saturday, based on their individual places. Junior Sam Sinkler, and seniors Vince Puzak and Austin Knowlton qualified for the state meet. Our varsity team also included seniors Gus Metzdorff, Andrew McGillivary and Eric Holm, plus junior Micahel Gaines.

The girls also had a great race, finishing seventh out of 13 teams. Junior Anna Ryden qualified individually to run in the State Meet. The rest of the team was made up of seniors Robin Fassett-Carman, CeCe Metzdorff, Haley King, junior Maria Pfister and sophomores Sammie Coffler and Daisy Richmond.

In addition, both boys and girls teams won academic team gold awards. Girls team GPA average is 3.97 and Boys team GPA average is 3.85.

Sam Sinkler, Vince Puzak and Anna Ryden won individual academic all state by having a 3.75 GPA or higher plus finishing in the top 15 at region Wednesday.

The main reason for our success this season was the hard work all the seniors were willing to put in this summer. It was a great team effort by both the boys and the girls.

Southwest High School Cross Country Team
Southwest High School has a rich cross country tradition and has won more State High School Cross-Country Boys Team Championships than any other Minnesota school.  At Southwest, one can be a “full” member of the team, and even earn a letter, without ever racing in a meet.  Non-competitive or fitness runners are valued as highly as those who compete for Conference, Regional and State titles. As a result, Southwest’s cross-country team alumni are now competing at NCAA Division I schools (including Stanford, Georgetown, and Minnesota), Division III schools (including Hamline, St. Johns, St. Olaf, Macalester, Carleton, Grinnell, Knox, and Tufts), as well as running for fitness in colleges, on trails and paths around the world.

Summer Training

Both the boys and girls team meet each morning at 8:00am at the high school track throughout the summer to run together. All new team members, including incoming freshmen, are encouraged to join in and participate as often as they can. If you want to get in some miles to get in shape, this is the practice to come to. There are runners of all ability levels, so you will find someone to run with. Some of the team members also meet again at the track at 4:00pm to work on their running form and speed. This practice is also open to all team members.

Fall Registration

You can register for cross country and other fall sports July 30th 2013 outside the athletic office.  Forms can be downloaded from the Southwest High School athletics homepage and completed before registration.  You will also have an opportunity to meet coaches and some teammates.
