Welcome to Southwest Cross Country 2014. Cross Country running is a great sport. It is both an individual and a team sport. It starts with days that can be 90 degrees in August and ends in November when it can be below freezing. And always outside. We have a small team so far this year because of graduating seniors. We would like you to come out the for team, whether it is for fitness, training for another sport, or racing in the meets. The season started on August 11th. But you can start now or after school starts. You will be welcome. You need to fill out the athletic forms and have a physical in past 3 years in order to start practice on August 11th. (not needed for summer or captain's practice) Forms can be downloaded from the SW web site. (As of this year, the School Board decided that you must be enrolled in a Mpls Public School to be eligible).
Southwest High School Cross Country Team
Southwest High School has a rich cross country tradition and has won more State High School Cross-Country Boys Team Championships than any other Minnesota school. At Southwest, one can be a “full” member of the team, and even earn a letter, without ever racing in a meet. Non-competitive or fitness runners are valued as highly as those who compete for Conference, Regional and State titles. As a result, Southwest’s cross-country team alumni are now competing at NCAA Division I schools (including Stanford, Georgetown, and Minnesota), Division III schools (including Hamline, St. Johns, St. Olaf, Macalester, Carleton, Grinnell, Knox, and Tufts), as well as running for fitness in colleges, on trails and paths around the world.
Both boys and girls team meet each morning at 7:30am at the high school track throughout the summer to run together. All new team members, including incoming freshmen, are encouraged to join in and participate as often as they can. If you want to get in some miles to get in shape, this is the practice to come to. There are runners of all ability levels, so you will find someone to run with. Some of the team members also meet again at the track at 4:00pm to work on their running form and speed. Both practices are open to all team members and to all interested middle school runners grades 6,7,8 or incoming freshman. On Saturday meet at door 7 SW High School at 7:30 am.
Our captains for 2014 are Ella Willford and Conlon Olson. Ella will be a senior this year and Conlon will be a junior.
You can register for cross country and other fall sports late July or early August outside the athletic office. Forms can be downloaded from the Southwest High School athletics homepage and completed before registration. You will also have an opportunity to meet coaches and some teammates.
The current calendar is shown below and will be updated as events and meets are scheduled. To view the full calendar please scroll down. The 2014 calendar is being updated and will be maintained throughout the summer and season. The times listed for meets are for start of first race and start of last race. In cross country, there can be several races for age, sex, JV, Varsity. The practice times may also vary day to day. Practice is generally twice daily Mon to Fri until school starts, plus a Sat morning practice. It sounds like a lot of practice, but you do not have to attend all the practices. Come as much as you can, and you will really improve.
Annual Southwest Cross Country 5K Fun Walk / Run
The 5th Annual Southwest Cross Country 5K Fun Walk / Run was held on Saturday, October 12, 2013. The 6th annual will be held on October 11 2014 at either Lake Harriet or Lake Calhoun. Parents, grandparents, siblings, friends o team members are all welcome.
