report from Caroline Hooper - A&H Lead Teacher

A wave of purple blanketed Beard Circle on September 8th when staff served over 1600 hamburgers to students.  The first annual First Friday was a hit.  There appeared to be maximum participation of both students and staff.  Senior Alex Theisen said “it was really nice of the teachers to do something like that for students.”   Numerous activities, clubs and sports were represented during First Friday throughout the commons area and the link.  It provided all students a chance to see the wide variety of extra-curricular options at Southwest.  Especially for new students and ninth graders it was a great opportunity to find a way to connect to the larger Southwest community.  Principal Bill Smith felt that “First Friday was an exciting experience bringing all of our students together.  It was a fantastic start to another school year for students and staff.”

A big thanks is extended to our Life Skills students who donated their time to grill most of the burgers for everyone.  The kitchen staff were stupendous in their support and flexibility in making sure everyone had food.  Parents were also represented and were a big help.  Finally, Laker spirit was proudly on display.  The energy was great and it was simply amazing to be part of such a positive, fun event.

Many thanks to all  A&H parents who attended or helped out at events this year.  While the attendance numbers at our events were low, the enthusiasm for A&H was very high.  We end this year with a great executive board and lots of ideas for making the Arts and Humanities Parent Group bigger and better than ever.

We will kick off the 2006/2007 school year with a Welcome Picnic for incoming freshmen on August 16th.  Last year’s picnic was a good time!  If you would like to help out or come and meet the incoming students and parents, please call me over the summer.

Watch for an A&H postcard this summer with next year's Parent Group events and dates.  We look forward to seeing many more of you at our meetings.  It's a great way to meet other parents who are looking to support their student's program and enjoy being more involved in general.
